The AP reports that state leaders in New Jersey have forgone their Sunday morning church or social schedule to convene and try to come to a compromise about ratifying the budget. Yesterday, Gov. Corzine signed an executive order limiting the state’s ability to spend money: only essential services like police, mental hospital workers, prisons and child welfare can function. Horse racing, which was one of the state monitored services scheduled to close first, won a reprieve from emergency courts allowing it continue to operate late Saturday. The lottery and road construction remain shut down, and about 45K state employees are at the moment, laid off.
State parks, beaches and historic sites were scheduled to shut after the Fourth of July weekend. Along the Garden State Parkway yesterday, digital traffic signs flashed the message: "All state parks and historic sites closed as of July 5."
